Simplifying Navigation for a Specialized Audience

Problem

Developing an independent web application targeted at the FQHC audience had several specific difficulties. The first challenge encountered was on the design of the site’s navigation where it was hard to provide a basic layout for the less computer literate middle-aged user while at the same time having a dual vertical navigation bar. Also, the need for senior human capital in that industry needed recognition of FQHC’s recruitment patterns. One of the main issues in building the platform was to provide users with easy access while keeping such additional tools as Pods for group discussions included.

Solution

To achieve the objectives of HealthSnap, we have used a research-driven, people-centered design approach. As a part of discovery phase, we performed the user research, competitor research, and stakeholder interviews to understand the opportunities and define the value proposition of the product meeting the needs of FQHCs. Thus, we sketched several navigation bar variants and finally chose a scheme with two solid bars divided by a thick line. This design was effective to avoid information overload and make the most important sections easily accessible by the users. Pods were incorporated to provide group chat and enable people to network and communicate within certain area of common interest or fields of work. The outcome is an easy to use, practical and aesthetic website specifically for the FQHC professionals.

The Solution

Platform Components

Dual-Navigation System:

A clean design of two horizontal bars on top of each other to help improve website usability and, therefore, navigability.

Pods for Group Engagement:

Interest based groups and work related sectors for conversation and information exchange.

MVP Design System:

To achieve a well-integrated, effective design for the platform, med- and high-fidelity wireframes were used.

Onboarding Flow Optimization:

A simple and efficient process that was expected to quickly introduce the users to the system and at the same time capture the user requirements efficiently.

Product development challenges and solutions

Challenge #1: Designing a Navigation System for Less Tech-Savvy Users

FQHC professionals needed an enhanced navigation system that would also be easy to use. The difficulty was in ensuring that the interface was intuitive while having full access to functions to appeal to the middle aged, less computer literate demographic while also being as sleek as possible. The system had to strip out that level of complexity and at the same time had to retain the basic tools and functionalities required for professional interactions and work.

Solution: Simplified Dual-Navigation System

To resolve this, we created a two bar navigation system where one bar is placed under a divider that separates it from the other bar to allow users to easily navigate different areas of the platform. This layout made the interface easier to navigate because features were grouped into two understandable sections, thus avoiding an overlap of items. The clean labelling of controls and easy to understand icons were also integrated in the design to improve readability and in this way the users would be able to move through the system with ease, while at the same time, they would feel empowered when interacting with the system.

Challenge #2: Fostering Engagement Through Networking Features

Since the purpose of having a platform is to strengthen professional relationships and promote better collaboration among FQHC professionals, there was need for tools that enable true engagement of the professionals. The problem was to design an environment that would promote interaction within corresponding areas of interest, allowing users to easily exchange experiences, ideas, and job offers while strengthening business connections within the relevant industry.

Solution: Innovative Pods for Collaboration

We introduced Pods, a functionality of letting the users form or be a member of group chat channels according to chosen fields of work or expertise. These Pods were therefore intended to foster active discussions, enable sharing of resources and to enhance working on shared objectives. With regard to Pods, users found it easy to interact with since it had an organized and well-defined layout of categories; the target users could easily develop their professional connections in their respective fields of interest.

Challenge #3: Catering to Specialized Hiring Needs in FQHCs

FQHCs have described challenges in recruiting and retaining senior leaders because there are few people who meet the required qualifications and possess the requisite experience. Given the situation that the number of candidates who meet the required qualifications is extremely low, issues such as the status of the industry and remuneration played a key role in the company’s struggle to attract talented employees. The constraints presented called for a solution to enhance the recruitment process without necessarily complicating it.

Solution: Insights-Driven Recruitment Features

To achieve these goals, we created various recruitment tools based on different trends observed in the industry and the candidates’ behavior. These tools enabled FQHCs to communicate their key selling propositions including; FQHCs are providing “mission fit” workplaces where employees are dedicated to fulfill the entity’s mission and where career advancement possibilities are achievable. The platform had provisions for posting job vacancies, screening candidates and posting comprehensive job descriptions to attract professional workers. Through implementing all these features, we ensured that FQHCs properly post positions to attract talent and easily recruit specialized staff.

The Impact:

  • Simplified Navigation: The dual-navigation system was helpful in enabling less savvy users to find and navigate the system to ensure its successful use.
  • Enhanced Networking: Pods promoted congregation, uniting individuals in terms of interest and their area of working.
  • Improved Talent Acquisition: Recruitment and retention of specialized healthcare professional staff was facilitated with features that FQHC targeted.
  • Positive User Reception: Credentials, clarity, and practicality of the platform were universally applauded by the target audience as regards the branding.
  • Strengthened Industry Collaboration: HealthSnap delivered to the FQHC professionals something that they needed most – an opportunity to connect with others, share information, and build relationships in the shortest time possible.
